Gyre - Wearable Art

Gyre is a wearable art piece made from marine debris collected from beach cleanups and upcycled single-use plastic food containers. The biological and physical processes of the ocean inspire it. On an immense scale, the ocean currents and gyres produce all the requirements for life and spread those essentials worldwide. At the local level, each beach has a unique ecosystem designed by its physical characteristics and specific living organisms. This piece celebrates the diversity of the ocean and the interconnected physical processes that make life abundant. The LED lights swirl like ocean gyres and simulate the increasing plastic pollution found throughout the world's oceans. Using recycled and reclaimed materials demonstrates prevention and clean-up as solutions to increasing plastic pollution.

Make an impact and reduce ocean plastic pollution!

Plastic pollution in the oceans is everywhere. Discarded nets trap marine and land animals, and plastic trash contaminates rivers and beaches. As plastics break down, they turn into microplastics that are eaten by fish, birds, and eventually people.

Join us in reducing plastic pollution.

Raise Awareness

Future Oceans raises awareness of ocean plastic pollution, upcycling, and sustainable materials through fashion shows. Check out the Future Oceans International shows and events.

Learn

Find out how plastic gets into the ocean and the problems caused by plastic pollution. Learn more at The Ocean Plastic Problem | Ocean Legacy Foundation.

Reduce your Plastic Use

Make decisions to reduce the amount of plastic you buy and use. Use a metal or glass reusable water bottle instead of single-use disposable plastic bottles. Choose durable clothes made of sustainable or upcycled materials. Find out more steps you can take at What You Can Do to Reduce Plastic Waste | US EPA.

Advocate

Together, we can make a difference. Advocate for reducing the amount of plastic packaging produced. Push for companies to take responsibility for the plastic they create and plan for recycling. Advance high-impact policies that reduce plastic pollution. Get started with the Canada Plastic Pact — Working together for a Canada without plastic waste or pollution.

Cleanup

Participate in a beach, shoreline, or creek cleanup to remove existing plastic trash from the environment. Find a local clean-up or plan your own Trash Blitz clean-up using the simple steps at TrashBlitz—5 Gyres.
